What are podcasts?
Podcasts are a relatively recent media phenomenon. Podcasts began as “audio blogging” during the 1980s. The introduction of the iPod propelled podcasts into mainstream media in 2001.
Podcasts are digitally-delivered audio content, featuring an endless array of topics, available anytime via multiple podcast platforms and on many devices. These custom-produced programs are designed to engage and influence a particular audience or demographic. Typically, podcasts are produced as a series and new episodes are released to subscribers weekly.
Subscribers download their favorite podcasts and listen via computer, tablet, smartphone or smart speaker. Podcasts most likely got their name from the iPod that propelled audio blogging into an “easy-to-consume” format that was broadly available. Ben Hammersley, a BBC journalist, is widely believed to have “invented” the word — PODCAST.
Podcasts provide an effective way to reach consumers in an engaging way. They are ideal for any type of programming from news and entertainment to educational and corporate communications. Because listeners subscribe, you reach an audience who has already expressed an interest in your messaging that may include products, services or technology.
Podcast listenership is growing at a rate of 20 percent per year. A significant reason for this is the declining use of PCs and tablets, as smartphones have replaced these devices. Add in the popularity and ease of use of the iTunes podcast platform, now known as Apple Podcasts, and it’s easy to understand why podcasts are gaining new listeners every day.
Podcast listeners are heavy consumers of radio as well. They are also more likely to be active social media consumers and tend to be more tech-savvy, as evidenced by their high likelihood of ownership of smart speakers, like Google Home and Amazon Alexa.
Podcast advertising revenue is growing too. Ad revenue grew from $69 million in 2015 to $402 million in 2018. Experts predict 2020 podcast advertising revenue to reach $659 million — a whopping 1,000% increase in a mere five years!
