Script writing for audio is a highly specialized skill. When you are ready to develop your script, you need to decide how long it will be, what information you will include, and who will write it. Most broadcast scripts are :60 seconds, although they can be shorter or longer. The length often depends on the intent or goal of the script and the environment in which the story will be placed. However, a :60 second script, is between 160 and 180 words. The average person speaks around 130 words per minute, so 180 may be slightly faster than the way a person would talk normally.
What to Include in Your Script
Sometimes, a minute may not feel like ample time to share a lot of information. That’s why it’s critical to consider the most important key messages upfront. You’ll also need to know the name, title and affiliation of your spokesperson if you’re including a soundbite. When you begin constructing your script, tell your story with a beginning, middle and end. A strong lead helps hold listener interest for the duration of the story.
5 Elements of a Great Script
Script writing is a very technical skill. It isn’t the same as writing a blog post or article. If you choose to write your own script, incorporate these 5 elements for better performance:
- Use a good hook at the beginning.
- Include a single idea per sentence.
- Keep most sentences at 25 words or less.
- Include a few longer sentences to keep things interesting.
- Allow for brief pauses throughout the script.
Should Your Vendor Write the Script?
If you are confident in writing the script, go for it! If you have some reservations or you simply don’t have the time, you may want to pass the task off to your vendor.
