Audio News Release - New studies show simple tests may detect Alzheimer's early
Today, Alzheimer’s disease can be diagnosed only after significant brain damage has already occurred... But new studies show that simple smell and eye tests may detect Alzheimer’s much earlier. Research results presented at the 2014 Alzheimer’s Association international conference show that a decreased ability to detect odors is significantly associated with brain shrinkage and progression to Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Heather Snyder of the Alzheimer's Association explains.
A second set of trials reported at the conference show that an abnormal brain protein that is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s can be detected in the eye, and is strongly correlated with the buildup of that protein in the brain. More research is needed to make these Alzheimer’s markers useful in the doctor’s office. Find out more about Alzheimer’s research at alz.org.
