Ten years ago, the world moved aggressively against the crisis in HIV/AIDS. This September, the United Nations will hold its first health summit since then to address a new global health crisis. Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, cancer and asthma already account for 60 percent of deaths worldwide, and risk factors such as obesity and inactivity are increasing. Everyone has a stake in the outcome, according to Steve Oesterle, senior vice president at the medical technology firm, Medtronic:
"This crisis could result in millions of premature deaths, billions in additional healthcare costs and trillions in lost economic growth. As the world leader in medical technology, we are addressing the unmet need associated with the pandemic of non-communicable diseases. The unique challenges of chronic diseases demand the unique solutions we are developing."
Today governments, medical professionals and companies like Medtronic are collaborating to make chronic disease a key part of the global healthcare agenda. Find out more online at medtronic.com.
